Captain Savio knows these Montauk waters like the back of his hand, and he's ready to put you on fish during this 4-hour fishing adventure. With morning and afternoon slots available, this intimate 2-person charter gives you personalized attention whether you're picking up a rod for the first time or you've been chasing stripers for decades. The waters around Montauk Point are legendary for good reason – this is where the Atlantic's best gamefish come to feed, and you'll be right in the thick of it.
You'll meet Captain Savio at the dock ready to target whatever's biting that day. Montauk's reputation as the "Fishing Capital of the World" isn't just hype – these waters consistently produce quality fish year-round. Your captain will adjust tactics based on conditions, season, and what the fish are telling him. Some days you might be working the rips for striped bass, other times you'll be bouncing bucktails along the bottom for fluke or black sea bass. The beauty of fishing with a local pro is that he reads the water and adapts on the fly. With just two anglers aboard, you'll get hands-on instruction and plenty of opportunities to work different techniques. Don't worry about bringing tackle – everything you need is provided, though you're welcome to bring your own gear if you prefer.
This isn't your typical party boat experience where you're shoulder-to-shoulder dropping bait straight down. Captain Savio specializes in light tackle fishing that puts you in direct contact with the fish. You'll learn bucktailing – a deadly technique for fluke and stripers where you work a lead-head jig tipped with bait or soft plastic along the bottom. When conditions are right, you might throw plugs at breaking fish or work the shoreline structure. For the fly fishing enthusiasts, there are opportunities to sight-cast to feeding fish, especially during the fall albacore and bonito runs. Each technique requires different skills, but your captain will coach you through the process. The light tackle approach means you feel every head shake and run – it's addictive once you experience the difference between this style and heavy bottom fishing.
Striped bass are the crown jewel of Montauk fishing, and these waters hold some genuine trophies. Spring and fall bring the best action as massive schools migrate past the Point. School bass in the 20-28 inch range provide consistent action, while keeper fish over 28 inches offer that trophy potential every angler dreams about. These fish are smart, powerful, and absolutely beautiful – their distinctive silver sides and black horizontal stripes make them unmistakable. Summer flounder, locally called fluke, are the flatfish that drive anglers crazy with their finicky feeding habits. These chameleons of the sea can exceed 20 inches and provide excellent table fare. They're ambush predators that bury in sand and gravel, exploding upward to grab prey – and hopefully your bucktail. Black sea bass are the reliable workhorses around Montauk's structure. These chunky bottom dwellers rarely win beauty contests, but they fight hard for their size and taste incredible. Peak season runs late spring through fall, with fish ranging from keeper size at 15 inches up to 4-5 pound specimens. Little tunny, also called false albacore, show up during fall migrations and provide some of the most exciting light tackle action available. These speedsters hit lures with authority and make screaming runs that test your drag system. They're perfect for anglers who want to experience what a true pelagic gamefish can do. Bluefish are the aggressive opportunists that show up in massive schools during summer and fall. These toothy predators attack anything that moves, providing fast action that's perfect for newcomers to build confidence while experienced anglers appreciate their raw power.
Captain Savio's half-day trips offer the perfect introduction to world-class Montauk fishing without the commitment of a full day charter. Whether you're a local angler looking to learn new techniques or a visitor wanting to experience what makes these waters special, this personalized approach delivers results. The 2-person limit ensures you get individual attention and plenty of fishing time. With morning and afternoon departures available, you can easily fit this trip into your schedule. Don't miss your chance to fish with a captain who knows exactly where the fish are and how to catch them.

Black Sea Bass are stocky bottom-dwellers that love structure - wrecks, rocks, jetties, and reefs from 20-120 feet deep. Most fish run 1-4 pounds, but we catch plenty of 5-8 pounders, especially the big males during spawning season when they turn bright blue. They're available from late spring through fall, with summer being prime time. These fish fight hard initially but tire once they hit the surface. Great eating with firm, sweet white meat that's perfect for the dinner table. They're curious fish that respond well to jigs and cut bait. Local tip: use a high-low rig with squid or clam strips, and when you find one, stick around - they're usually in groups on good bottom.

Bluefish are aggressive predators that put up serious fights and make great table fare when handled right. Most run 3-10 pounds, though we see some pushing 15+ during good years. They show up in our waters from late spring through fall, hitting everything from the surf to deeper offshore structure. Blues travel in schools and feed with incredible intensity - when you find them, it's often fast and furious action. They have razor-sharp teeth, so wire leaders help prevent bite-offs. Best fishing is often during moving water on the tide changes. Here's the key: bleed them immediately and get them on ice fast. Fresh bluefish is excellent eating, but the quality drops quickly if not handled properly.

Little Tunny, also called False Albacore, are smaller members of the tuna family that average 10-12 pounds but can hit 20+. These torpedo-shaped speedsters travel in schools near the surface around jetties, inlets, and points during late summer through fall. They're incredibly strong fighters that'll test your drag and stamina - many anglers are surprised by the power these "smaller" tunas pack. The meat is darker and stronger-flavored than other tunas, but fresh it's quite good. Best time is when you hear them feeding - they're loud when hitting bait schools. Pro tip: when you hook one, get ready for multiple hookups since they school tight. Use small lures and be prepared for blistering runs.

Striped Bass are the king of our local waters, ranging from schoolie-sized fish around 20 inches up to trophy cows pushing 40+ pounds. These silver-sided fighters with distinctive black stripes are available year-round but peak during spring and fall migrations. Find them around structure - rocks, jetties, rips, and drop-offs where they ambush baitfish. Stripers are incredible gamefish with powerful runs and headshaking fights. The meat is excellent with firm, flaky texture. They're structure-oriented, so focus on areas with moving water and current breaks. Key tip: match your bait to what they're feeding on. When bunker are around, use large baits; when they're on sand eels, downsize to smaller offerings and work them near bottom.

Summer Flounder, or fluke, are the ultimate ambush predators lying flat on sandy bottoms waiting for prey to swim overhead. They average 15-20 inches but doormat-sized fish over 5 pounds make for exciting catches. Best fishing runs May through October, with peak action in summer months. These flatfish are found in bays, harbors, and nearshore waters, especially around channel edges and structure transitions. Fluke are excellent table fare with sweet, white meat that's hard to beat. They can be tricky - they'll often grab bait and run before setting the hook. My advice: use a bucktail tipped with squid or spearing, keep it moving just off bottom, and give them a few seconds when you feel the hit before setting the hook hard.
